If you are fortunate to own a tabletop dishwasher, then you most likely have had to purchase a portable dishwasher adapter; this might be when you first bought your dishwasher or have found a leak at the drain connection. Either way, you probably got stuck between choosing a portable dishwasher adapter (aka faucet adapter) or faucet aerator.
I have often been asked by owners of countertop dishwashers “what’s the difference between a portable dishwasher adapter and a faucet aerator?” Today I will explain the principle difference between them. I will also include some of the recommended brands in use today.
Portable Dishwasher Adapter
A portable dishwasher adapter is a small hollowed-out metallic connector that threads into the head of a sink faucet. A washer fits inside a recessed groove to act as a seal when tightened onto the head of the valve. The end that extends from it is usually tapered to allow it to be quickly attached to a hose. Once everything is properly connected, water can run unrestricted from the sink to the hose.
A faucet aerator functions the same as an adapter, but the most notable difference is that it will have a plastic or metal mesh screen installed into the head or core of the body. To allow the introduction of into the flowing water from the head through the tiny holes is why a mesh screen is incorporated.
The addition of the screen was mandated by the Environmental Policy Act (EPAct) back in the early 90’s. It was a part of an energy conservation campaign geared to reduce the gallons per minute from toilets, kitchen and bathroom faucets and shower heads.
After reading the two short explanations, you are probably wondering what does this all mean. Well, this all depends on your dishwasher. It most likely that you will have faucet adapter with an aerator if you purchased a home built after 1992. However many of today’s dishwashers are designed to consume the minimal amount of water, so you might have to remove the adapter and replace it with the one that comes with your unit.
If you install the incorrect adapter, you might be potentially damaging your unit because you might be limiting the required flow of water. For example, the Frigidaire FFPD1821M 18 inches. Portable Dishwasher requires a special adapter that maintains water pressure between 20 – 120 psi.
On the other hand, the SPT SD-2201S uses a non-aerated portable dishwasher adapter; this means water flows unimpeded from the tap into the washer. The unit regulates the water pressure and flows internally for the six different cycles, so installing an aerated adapter is not necessary. All
To sum it all up, read the manufacturer instructions before installing. The instructions should tell you whether or not you will need an adapter or aerator. Additionally, check and see if you can download a copy of the parts manual. That will also tell what type of adapter you will need if you have to replace it later.
